Pet Licenses

  • Sec. 4-36. - License Required.

    No person owning, controlling or having care or custody of a dog or cat over the age of three months shall permit the same to be and remain within the city unless such person shall obtain a license therefor in accordance with the provisions of this article and unless such person shall obtain and maintain a currently effective rabies vaccination thereof. Any person who violates this article shall, upon conviction therefor, be fined.

    • Sec. 4-37. - Application—Where made.

      An application for the animal license required by section 4-36 shall be made to the city clerk or his duly authorized representative.

    Sec. 4-38. - Same—When made.

    Applications for an animal license are due and the license fee for animal licenses are due as of the first of January of each year and are delinquent on the first of February each year, and each license issued shall expire on December 31 of the year it is issued.

    Sec. 4-39. - Same—Proof of vaccination.

    The application for an animal license shall be accompanied by written proof that the animal to be licensed has been vaccinated for rabies within the past year prior to the application for such license.

    • Sec. 4-40. - Same—Fee.

       A license fee of $4.00 for each animal license applied for shall accompany the application, which fee shall be applicable whether the license is for a full year or for the unexpired part of a year.

    Sec. 4-41. - Issuance and display of tag.

    The city clerk, or his duly authorized representative, shall, upon receiving the necessary application and proofs as required in this division, issue an animal tag made of metal or other durable material which shall be displayed upon the dog or cat licensed and for which it is issued, by attaching it to the collar or harness of such animal. All persons owning, controlling or having care or custody of any dog or cat within the city limits are required to keep such license tag displayed upon such animal at all times. The tag above required shall be of a distinctive color and shape and the color of such tag shall be changed each year so that the same color shall not appear in successive years. Each license tag shall bear a number which shall correspond to a certificate of license, one copy of which shall be kept by the city and one copy of which shall be furnished to the licensee, which certificate shall show the day issued, the name and address of the owner or keeper of the animal and the general description of the animal including its name, if any.
